House Rules for DND

There are a lot of source books and some optional rules for Fifth Edition Dungeon and Dragons.  This is how I plan to run the game.

Character Creation and Leveling

  • Use 4d6 drop lowest and roll two characters.  If both are hopeless use the standard array (15,14,13,12,10,8) otherwise pick one.  Use !randchar in the discord character channel.
  • Allowed content is - Players Handbook (PHB) and Xanthars Guide (XGE) excluding Hexblade
  • PHB Chapter Six Options - Multiclassing & Feats allowed.
  • Everyone will get a free, character appropriate, feat assigned by the DM at level 1.  This will be to help round out the party and bolster weaker characters.  Usually from half-feats like Linguist, Athlete or party support such as Healer.
  • Level 4 Ability Score Improvement feature.  All characters get a Feat and Ability score improvement rather than having to pick only one.
  • Characters will be tracked using DND Beyond. You can create an account for free.

Spell Changes

  • Healing Spirit - Has received official errata of "1 + Ability Mod" heals
  • Magic Jar - You keep your own mental attributes and gain the physical attributes not features of the target.
  • Illusions - Are poorly defined in the rules.  If you want to make a lot of use of these we need a discussion to agree what is allowed so you are not disappointed.

Resting and Healing

As a group the party can take two short rests between each long rest.  Shorts rests will not be a fixed amount of time but long enough for the characters to safely stop, relax, and eat some food.

Additional Options in Combat

  • Characters can drink potions as a bonus action

Campaign Progress

Will use Milestone optional rule for Leveling; that is you gain levels after competing quests.  Expectation is in Tier 1 you will level after most quests; Tier 2 every 2-3 quests.  Campaign will finish early Tier 3 around level 12.

Inspiration

At the end of each session the players will vote as to what was the most stand out event of the session (heroics funny, role-play) and the characters involved will each receive inspiration for the next session.  Remember Inspiration cannot stack.  To make using Inspiration easier it can be spent after a dice roll to gain a re-roll.  The new result stands even if it is lower.

Magic Items

Magic items will be used but they cannot be automatically identified during a short rest.  As well as those found adventuring a small selection of items will be available for purchase.  No items giving flight or teleportation will be found.  All magic weapons are rare.  If you want a particular item for your character ask and I will see if it can be added in.
