  • Chapter 93 ~ A mountain encounter

Asking around town we found out the bounty hunters looking for Sarah were staying at the Black Eagle and had increase the reward to 200 crowns!  Rubinifer was eager to deal with them but that meant finding them.  Instead we decided to return to the mountains where we had spotted the Pegasus to look for the missing children.

As we left town we saw some flyers about a boat race from Sonnefurt to Wusterburg having in a weeks time.  Crews of four were able to complete to win a parcel of land far away in the north of the empire.

travelling through the Winter's Teeth pass were not only the usual merchants but several men heading the Sonnefurt to try and win the competition.  Finando's group had two rowers and two archers; the archers were to shoot at other boats to slow them down!  It seems there was no rule of law on the waterway during this wacky race.  We gave them directions to Sonnefurt along the forest road.  Perhaps Becker's Bandits would deal with them, or they with the bandits...

With no sign of the children we were thinking of giving up when the bounty hunters looking for Tatiana Gireva (Sarah's alias) came into sight.  We exchanged a few pleasant words asking them about the children but it did not take long for Rubinfer to close the distance and spring in with an unprovoked attack.

His first attack, thanks to bands of power, felled one of the three.  He was confident his ring of protection from Humans would let him win the battle but he was shocked to injured by the groups leader who lashed out at him with a human-bane weapon!

Zena, Madoc and even Tayy all charged in against the last assassin.  Madoc swung wildly with Spiritrender, his bone staff, but could not hit.  Tayy's flurry of blows could not do enough damage to get through her enchanted armour.  That left only Zena inflicting damage on the assassin who quickly put her own blade to use knocking Zena out cold with what was almost a fatal blow.  She turned her attention to Madoc next and wilted him down with one cut and slash after another until he too was saved from death only by the luck of the gods.

Tayy was about to flee when a badly injured Rubinifer finally managed to land a blow on his opponent that was not dodged killing him (go bands of power).  He steps up to aid his halfing ally and with a single swing of Ironfang cut the head off the last assassin.

Having checked their friends would live Tayy and Rubinifer each picked up a magical sword [Damage +2 and Human-bane respectively].  Tayy also got a potion of man-bane poison.  When Zena recovered she tried on the leather armour but destroyed it while trying to attune.  Madoc swigged a potion of healing and we all headed back to town.
