Chapter Nine: Entering the Cave
Following Gundrun's direction we got to the secret location of Wave Echo cave. At the end of a short passage way we found a dead dwarf, who we assume was one of Gundrun's brothers. Heading east we were attacked by a swarm of blood sucking Stirgi. After that we moved south finding many bodies of those that fell in ancient battle. As we looked around these corpses rose up and attacked. Having just cleared the room we were surprised by Ghouls who had come at us from behind and almost ripped Nessa in half! Staggering on we then found a wraith that was most put out by our intrusion into his home. Licking our wounds after another bloody battle we decided there was no option but to rest here in the caves. Myandir created a magic bubble for us rest inside allowing us all to recover.
Chapter Ten: Beholden
Myandir's owl scouted out the next section of the cave for us and we could see many zombies milling around along with a floating skull that Myandir identified as the spirit of a powerful wizard. There was also another building we had been inside yet. Not wanting an enemy force to attack us from behind should we engage the Zombies we carefully entered the building.
Here we were addressed by a young beholder that seemed to think the mine was still operational and we were part of the work force. Unable to convince it the mine was in ruin it declared us intruders and attacked. Raymondo tried to scare the creature but it responded by fearing him! Thinking the creature may have magic resistance even Myandir resorted to using a blade (the first time ever) and eventually the giant floating eye was cut down.
The chamber appeared to be the spell forge of the mine and it was still partially operational. After some testing we found that weapons and armour placed in the forge would gain a minor enchantment for a few hours. We also found a magical mace and breastplate that were permanently enchanted but had never left the workshop.
We tried setting a trap and luring the Flaming skull and his minions towards us by shooting one of the Zombies and then retreating. However the dead Wizard was too cunning for this plan and shot a giant ball of fire down to where we were hiding. Bjorn charged the creature and with Rance's assistance there, now enchanted, weapons smashed the creature to dust. The milling zombies were easy to clear away with their leader gone. Myandir then performed a cleansing ritual to banish the spirit of the monster and prevent it from returning.
Chapter Eleven: Black Spider at last
Advancing north we could see a large fissure where a drow was directing several bugbears to dig through rubble. There were ropes tied on the far side that the bugbears had used to climb down but none on our side. Bjorn held a rope for Rance and Raymondo to climb down but Rance slipped and fell alerting the enemy.
The drow fled at the first sign of trouble but the bugbears attacked. As they advanced on Rance Bjorn jumped down grappling one of them and propelled both of them into the stream running through the cavern. Myandir made a heroic feat of athletics and did a running jump into the middle of the cavern but instead of falling misty stepped to land on the far ledge where he hypnotized one of the bugbears. Those at the bottom were quickly dispatched and then Myandir pushed the foreman over the edge and he was hacked apart by Bjorn as he lay prone on the rocks below.
Knowing we were now expected Nessa turned herself and Bjorn invisible. In the dim light of the stone chamber ahead we could see several large spiders spread out and a single lone dwarf in chains. Bjorn attacked one of the spiders with surprise while Myandir flung a flaming sphere at the back of the room injuring a second. Nezznar, the drow known as the Black Spider, revealed himself by casting Magic Missile at Bjorn and demanding our surrender or he would kill Nundro the last of the Rockseeker brothers. Rance and Bjorn formed a line holding the entry way with Raymondo shooting arrows as the spiders advanced forming a perfect location for Myandir to test his new spell.
A mighty ball of fire erupted engulfing Nezznar and four spiders and then Rover, the flaming sphere, rolled over the drow as well! Having sneaked into the room Nessa also blinded our opponent. Bjorn was able to quickly finish off the burnt spiders and stepped over delivering the coup de grace by decapitating the Black Spider. At this point the dwarf revealed himself to be another shape changer. The chains fell away and he lunged forward biting Rance but he soon fell along with the rest of the spider clan.
In the next room we found the real Nundro chained up. Taking him and the loot we recovered from Nezznar's liar, as well as a set of magical Gauntlets found back at the bottom of the fissure we departed the caves and returned to Phandalin to reunite the brothers.
