Rift City Campaign - Chapter 46 May 2021

Background
A nostalgic dungeon delving game using the Moldvay Basic D&D rules which we have now been playing for over three years. It is an open table format game with who ever turns up heading into the dungeon making progress somewhat difficult as we keep going through the same rooms.  The game is currently socially distanced being playing using Discord.

Chapter 46

Having come back from the caves with a load of magic items our mercenary company decided to go into the caves closer to the City to slay some Kobold's and work out what the items did.  Today's adventures were -

  • Berg the Dwarven Warrior
  • Halvor Templar of Yrt
  • Inarra the artillery Wizard
  • Kate (short for Bob) the Halfing
  • Brigham Cleric of U'ta
  • Gibbet Master Thief

Some were easy to discover as just putting on the cloaks we had an invisible Templer and a bluring Wizard.  The rest needed actual combat for us to find out their properties.  Inarra trying using the censer and managed to summon an Air Elemental.  Unfortunately it went away as soon as she moved.

We struggled to find any monsters in the first cave and moved to the witches cave (as we had the map for that one).  Still not finding anything we headed into the area lit by torches and found an alter to evil gods as well as some fresh corpses.  Halvor tried a dispel evil but it had no effect on the alter.  It did though allow Brigham to get rid of the cursed shield she was carrying!

Still struggling to find anything to fight (spider swarms do not count) we eventually encountered six Goblins.  These were quickly dispatched but let us see how effective our weapons were.

Having seen that the torches had been recently lit we waiting around to see if anyone returned to keep them burning.  After about an hour a group of Orcs accompanied by an Orc Captain arrived.  We took him prison and killed the rest.  After integration we found out that the "mistress" was nearby with the rest of the Orc tribe and she was the one who they were taking the bodies too.  We may have finally found the necromancer that was plaguing the city with Zombies!  Taking our prisoner back the city we started to plan our return to rid the world of this new evil we had discovered.

The next day the two Clerics healed everyone and Halvor cast another dispel evil.  This time we had two more cursed Shields to get rid of.  That means four of the six magical shields we have found so far have been cursed!

Game notes

One of those games where not much happened.  We had asked a couple of times if we could just hand way killing some Kobolds to find out what the magic bonuses were but it was not to be and it took us a couple of hours to find a Goblin patrol.  At least we managed to stumble into one of the plots we have been ignoring for months! We may finally have solved where all the Zombies were coming from.

On Elementals, not sure if the DM had read the spell or decided it did not work the same way but we were quite lucky the uncontrolled elemental did not turn on us because if a Wizard lost concentration on a summoning spell the creature turns on the caster.

Kate the Halfing due to high Dex, Magic shield and ring of protection now has AC -2 making her a wonderful tank in combat.  Everyone of the regular party has a magic hand weapon; Berg in fact has two.

  1. I must hold up my hands to the Elemental mistake. I had forgotten that it was an automatic attack and rolled for a reaction instead. Finding out that it was relatively-well disposed to Inarra (but no longer under her control) I let it depart. I shall try to remember next time it should launch a fierce attack.

    1. Well if David reads this I am sure he will be more careful when he summons the Elemental to slay the Orc's Mistress. At least activating the item did not count as casting a spell since it did not disrupt his invisibility.
