Campaign Log: Lost Mine of Phandelver

The final Chapter: Thunder tree
Following Gundrun's rescue and the reopening of the mine we were able to purchase the ruined manor house from the town and use our new found wealth to restore it to a livable state.  Nessa and Raymondo saw there was a gap in the local market with more miners coming into the area and hired a number of assistants for their newly opened brothel.  This proved very popular.
After a month of resting we decided to go and collect the treasure we knew was in Thudertree and finally talk to Reidoth the druid.  Fortunatly we arrived from the south and the first dwelling we went to was where the druid kept his watch!  He argued with Bjorn about Owlbears being cute but did tell us there were some robed cultists and a Dragon in the ruins.  He was also able to direct us to the herbalists shop.  Raymondo was very keen to talk to the Dragon but we convinced him to explore the ruined village first.

Having battled our way through a few zombies and twig blights we recovered the emerald pendant we knew was hidden there.  As we left more twig blights tried to ambush us.  As we dispatched them we saw one of the cultists running to another building in the south-east of the village.

Knocking on the door Raymondo went inside and talked to Favric leader of the Cult of the Dragon.  They were here to become minions of the Venomfang, the dragon, and agreed to take Raymondo to meet him.



Favric, Raymondo and the other cultists headed straight for the dragons lair with the other party members following at a distance.  Two people entered the building but only one would leave.  The two introduced themselves to the dragon and then Favric offered Raymondo as a tribute and attacked him with a dagger!

Raymondo responded with a spell of fear which, unfortunately, caught Venomfang in its area of effect.  The breath of the dragon belched out a noxious gas that left Favric dead and Raymondo dying.  Nessa's spell of hypnotic patterns rendered most of the other cultists unable to move.  This allowed Rance to ran into the room while Bjorn and Myandir finished off the other cultists.  Rance fed a potion to Raymondo and hacked at the dragon, as did Bjorn running into the room moment later.

Raymondo tried to pretend he was a dragonborn and truly on Venomfangs side and he narrowly missed being eaten by the monster.  The dragon was then set up on by a flaming sphere and the skeleton of Favric which lurched to its feet as Nessa uttered arcane words through the window.  Badly injured the dragon fled from its lair.  Myandir tried to finish it off with a fireball but it was able to escape more dead than alive. 

With the ruins cleared out our heroes returned to Phandalin and their business ventures there.  Nessa and Raymondo had several children together and we will return in a generation to see how they fair with the next adventure, the dragon of Icespire peak...

Death Zone 2020 - A Review

    Once again we have a beautifully produced full colour book that is slightly marred by the lack of proof reading.  Almost everything in the book is a reprint of the 2016 content updated to use the new team special rules.  There are little things such as Ranulf the Ref still having to "roll higher than the AV of the player" even though the main rule book changes AV 7 to be AV 8+ being everyone else is having to roll equal to AV.  Then we have the new Mercenary rules where the Elf starts with AG 2+ but can increase this by 2 to AG 0+ when AG 1+ is the max allowed!!? New Inducements This section takes all the inducements printed in the old Death Zone and Spike journals and updates them to use the new team special rules.  Instead of being taken by an Orc or Dwarf team they are now Badlands Brawl or Worlds Edge.  This expands which teams can take them.  Some of the inducements have had minor alterations and there are a couple I have not seen before. Arcane Trickster

The Arcane Trickster is my favourite sub-class in Fifth Edition D&D.  It is not the most powerful but is a lot of fun.   Trickster does not need to multi-class but a single level of Wizard gives a big boost with access to all first level spells, ritual casting and we can trade out our known spells for more Second Level options.  Best spot for multi-class is level six but if we have a game where we expect to spend a long time in Tier 1 we can also dip at level 2. Rogues get lots of choice for using a Bonus action and Reaction as we go up levels. Actions: Attack; (3) cast a spell Bonus: Off-hand Attack; (2) Dash; Disengage; Hide; Mage Hand; (13) Versatile Trickster Reaction: (4) Shield ; (5) Uncanny Dodge; (6) Feather Fall ; (17) Spell Thief A trickster wants good Dex and Int as well as Dark Vision, after all it is hard to sneak around carrying a torch.  If we are using point buy that gives us three choices in the PHB - High Elf, Half-Elf and Forest Gnome.
