WFRP Chapter 57-58: Great Balls of Fire!


 

Background: Exploring the 'Old World' of Warhammer where the renaissance meets magic.  In Wissenland, where the Grey and Black mountains meet, sits the sleepy trading town of Kreutzhofen but nearby the minions of Chaos plot disruption.

Chapter 57

Having spent an hour at the Black Eagle discussing options the party split into two groups.  Rubinifa and Flendac stayed in town planning to plant the warp stone on watch commander Lothar Matheus. 

Having met up with Magnus and given him the information about the outlaws Morgan, Ragnar and Faefiel were sent with Sanna and a group of Watchmen in to the Winters Teeth Pass to deal with Gabriel Martinelli outlaw gang.  

As expected the party were accosted by Gabriel Martinelli and his outlaw gang.  A large brawl ensured.  Ragnar and Faefiel had fate on their side as they avoided killing blows.  After a few minutes nearly everyone was bleeding out on the floor.  Gabriel took on Sanna directly and she killed him.  With no watchman left standing Morgan stepped out of the shadows and blasted Sanna with a fireball killing her instantly.

Chapter 58

Meanwhile Tayy joined Rubinifa and Flendac at the pub.  He came up with a plan of baking some donuts for the watch and a special cake for commander Lothar as a way of finding out where his room in the watch house was.  He delivered the donuts that the watchmen enjoyed and managed to persuade Jonus Hoffman to take him to Lothar's room and leave the cake on his desk.

Having been told which room to go to Rubinifa and Flendac sneaked in over the back wall and tried to get through the building using there magical boots of silence.  Unfortunately one of the lieutenants spotted them and they made up a story about looking for the Tray Tayy had delivered the donuts on.  Flendac kept the Lt talking while Rubinifa slipped away and hid the warp stone in Lothar's bed.  The pair then managed to talk their way out of the watch house and promptly returned to the pub.  Where there then recalled having left Tayy in the alley way as a lookout and went back to get him!

The next day the three friends went and found Magnus Wolfclaw and convinced him to check out Lothar's room for evidence of corruption.  He came back later having found a bag of 700 gold crowns and the warp stone!  Momentarily it looked like he was giving us all the gold but it turned out to be only a few crowns each.

Meanwhile Morgan and the others collected the head of Martinelli and headed back to town flush with many coins and new magic items.  On the way back they saw Thomas Lamar heading home! Morgan was able to use he cloak of many faces to disguise himself and was very lucky that Lamar did not see through the illusion (Lamar failed an INT 89 test).

Everyone met back up in the Black Eagle and started discussing what they wanted to do next.  Morgan wanted to learn some new spells but was struggling to thing of who to ask when Tayy piped up with "Mr Morgan sir, the Orcs we met had a Shaman.  Perhaps she could help?".

Death Zone 2020 - A Review

    Once again we have a beautifully produced full colour book that is slightly marred by the lack of proof reading.  Almost everything in the book is a reprint of the 2016 content updated to use the new team special rules.  There are little things such as Ranulf the Ref still having to "roll higher than the AV of the player" even though the main rule book changes AV 7 to be AV 8+ being everyone else is having to roll equal to AV.  Then we have the new Mercenary rules where the Elf starts with AG 2+ but can increase this by 2 to AG 0+ when AG 1+ is the max allowed!!? New Inducements This section takes all the inducements printed in the old Death Zone and Spike journals and updates them to use the new team special rules.  Instead of being taken by an Orc or Dwarf team they are now Badlands Brawl or Worlds Edge.  This expands which teams can take them.  Some of the inducements have had minor alterations and there are a couple I have not seen before. Arcane Trickster

The Arcane Trickster is my favourite sub-class in Fifth Edition D&D.  It is not the most powerful but is a lot of fun.   Trickster does not need to multi-class but a single level of Wizard gives a big boost with access to all first level spells, ritual casting and we can trade out our known spells for more Second Level options.  Best spot for multi-class is level six but if we have a game where we expect to spend a long time in Tier 1 we can also dip at level 2. Rogues get lots of choice for using a Bonus action and Reaction as we go up levels. Actions: Attack; (3) cast a spell Bonus: Off-hand Attack; (2) Dash; Disengage; Hide; Mage Hand; (13) Versatile Trickster Reaction: (4) Shield ; (5) Uncanny Dodge; (6) Feather Fall ; (17) Spell Thief A trickster wants good Dex and Int as well as Dark Vision, after all it is hard to sneak around carrying a torch.  If we are using point buy that gives us three choices in the PHB - High Elf, Half-Elf and Forest Gnome.
