WFRP Chapter 74: Intrigue


Background: Intrigue at the court of Nuln.

Chapter 74

Our breakfast was interrupted by Donna who came to make us an offer for training Morgan.  Her boss, Alf Stuart, was concerned that the High Priest of Sigmar has proposed a new law that would see anyone who did not worship Sigmar have to pay extra tax.  The Countess was due to make a ruling on this following the grand ball in ten days time.  During the ball she would seek the views of her advisers.  If we can make sure the vote does not pass then she would train Morgan.  She left us a list of whom we needed to speak with.

Having been to the temple of the sea god already we started our quest by returning their and talking with Adam Peaty.  He told us that he, and the other high priests, were against this law.  Even if it was adjusted to also include the other major religions.

As we were in Neustadt our next stop was Ellis Boyd.  We went in with Mr Morgan pretending to be a merchant thinking of starting up business in the city.  While Mr Boyd was a worshiper of Sigmar he was not very devout and did not think the law was a good idea.  After he tried some of Tayy's cake he was quite impressed that worshiping other religions had benefit.  Mr Morgan agreed for Tayy to deliver a whole cake the next day.

Next we visited Andy Dufranne Representative for Shanty Town as Zena thought he might be able to help us.  After a little bit of back and fourth we put all our cards on the table.  Once he heard Donna's name he was willing to assist and gave us background information.

  • Kanya had become the high priest about 18 months ago after the death of the last high priest.  
  • Jurgan Klopp also got voted in, with the support of Borris Becker, after another mysterious death.  Andy does not get on with Jurgan.
  • Jenson worships Sigmar but his wife, Flora, does not.  He is upstanding and forthright.  We may be able to get some information from his wife.
  • Jarred had been acting someone nervous the last few weeks.
  • Becker owns the Hofbower Trading Co. and Golden Hammer club.

Flendac wanted to talk to the champion Kanaga but it seemed he stayed at the palace.  Asking around as a few of the inns we could not a watering hole he favored.

Finally we went to see the doctor.  Talking with Kolh he told us more about the martial tournament.  Rounds are usually till first blood and whoever wins becomes the cities champion for the following year.  A couple of years ago when Kanaga was injured he challenged the other person to fight to the death so he could retain the title of champion.  Flendac also paid the doctor 5 gold to get his views on the law which it turned out he was in favor of.

Summary of the day.

The Wizards College, 3 Churches and Ellis Boyd gives 11 influence against the vote passing.  Church of Sigmar and the doctor is 4 influence for. 20 influence unknown.

Death Zone 2020 - A Review

    Once again we have a beautifully produced full colour book that is slightly marred by the lack of proof reading.  Almost everything in the book is a reprint of the 2016 content updated to use the new team special rules.  There are little things such as Ranulf the Ref still having to "roll higher than the AV of the player" even though the main rule book changes AV 7 to be AV 8+ being everyone else is having to roll equal to AV.  Then we have the new Mercenary rules where the Elf starts with AG 2+ but can increase this by 2 to AG 0+ when AG 1+ is the max allowed!!? New Inducements This section takes all the inducements printed in the old Death Zone and Spike journals and updates them to use the new team special rules.  Instead of being taken by an Orc or Dwarf team they are now Badlands Brawl or Worlds Edge.  This expands which teams can take them.  Some of the inducements have had minor alterations and there are a couple I have not seen before. Arcane Trickster

The Arcane Trickster is my favourite sub-class in Fifth Edition D&D.  It is not the most powerful but is a lot of fun.   Trickster does not need to multi-class but a single level of Wizard gives a big boost with access to all first level spells, ritual casting and we can trade out our known spells for more Second Level options.  Best spot for multi-class is level six but if we have a game where we expect to spend a long time in Tier 1 we can also dip at level 2. Rogues get lots of choice for using a Bonus action and Reaction as we go up levels. Actions: Attack; (3) cast a spell Bonus: Off-hand Attack; (2) Dash; Disengage; Hide; Mage Hand; (13) Versatile Trickster Reaction: (4) Shield ; (5) Uncanny Dodge; (6) Feather Fall ; (17) Spell Thief A trickster wants good Dex and Int as well as Dark Vision, after all it is hard to sneak around carrying a torch.  If we are using point buy that gives us three choices in the PHB - High Elf, Half-Elf and Forest Gnome.
